Stories and Editorials

The Confederate States Military Institute is our contribution to the dialogue and the preservation of Southern history and heritage. There’s some politics thrown in for interest, but mainly just some things to make folks think a bit.

  • Editorials include both opinion and historical facts
  • Stories are for the enjoyment of our readers and they’re FREE!
  • Archives are just some stuff we’ve held on to because we liked it then and hope you like it now!

Consider the following quotes:

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and it is not either to save or destroy slavery.” Abraham Lincoln - 1862

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. US Constitution - 10th Amendment (Reserve Powers Clause)

“Each state, in ratifying the constitution, is considered a sovereign body, independent of all others, and only to be bound by its own voluntary act.” James Madison - The Federalist, Article 39

“If the new plan be adopted, the union will still be, in fact and in theory, an association of states or a confederacy.” Alexander Hamilton - The Federalist, Article 85

If Lincoln’s “union” was limited by the delegated powers, the states were sovereign, and had voluntarily seceded - - - on what basis could Lincoln apply force to keep them in the Union?

A Different Look at Consequences

Consider the 14,000 partisan arrests and the closure of 300 newspapers. Freedom of speech and the press was suspended by the sole act of one President. How close did we come to permanent dictatorship?

One of our Civil War legacies
